Salting the kiln. Salt is spread on a piece of angle iron, and dumped on top of the grate full of burning wood. This picture was taken just after dumping the salt. This stage of the firing, after 70 hours or more, is taxing on the stokers, exhausting and exhilarating at the same time. My own feeling is that pyromania can help get you through it.
